Sunderland vs Hull CIty

3pm – 19.11.16

The term ‘relegation six-pointer’ can be overused at times but it’s certainly appropriate here as the two sides leading the relegation market go head-to-head. Sunderland finally won their first game under David Moyes, putting an end to a run of 10 matches without victory. Since 1998/99, 49 sides have gone at least 10 matches winless streak in the league (doesn’t include carrying over from the season before and had at least five games left that season), and in their next five matches backing them would have seen a -16% ROI, whilst supporting their opponents returned a profit. Not good news for Mackem fans with Hull and Swansea in their next five.

Hull themselves ended a losing streak before the international break; their victory over Southampton was their first in eight. On the road it’s three consecutive defeats but most recently they were unlucky to lose to Watford, while earlier in the season they stole a point at Burnley and beat fellow strugglers Swansea.

Encouragingly for the Tigers, Sunderland’s performances have been much better on the road where they’ve won their only game and lost by more than a goal just once, compared to at the Stadium of Light. There seems to be an added pressure of playing in front of their despairing home fans, losing four of five matches, conceding 13 in this time. Additionally, the Black Cats have failed to win any of their last six at home against promoted sides so we’ll take them on in this crucial fixture.
