Tottenham v Southampton

14.15 - 19/3/2017 - White Hart Lane, North London

Spurs put six past Millwall to see themselves through to the FA Cup semi-finals, but the big story was the loss of Harry Kane partway through the game to an ankle injury similar to the one that hampered him earlier in the season – he’ll be out for much of the rest of the campaign. This weekend they welcome Southampton to White Hart Lane; the Saints have recorded back-to-back away wins in high-scoring games, so Tottenham’s excellent home record could be under threat.

It’s hard to overstate Spurs’ dominance at home, particularly over middle-third sides, in recent weeks. They’ve won nine on the spin at White Hart Lane, six of these victories coming to nil, with an average of 3 goals per game, but they’ll recall that Southampton were the last team to beat them in the league at the Lane. They’ll also be conscious that Kane was the scorer for nine of their last 12 goals at home (Dele Alli is the only other player to have netted for them at home in that time), so while Heung-Min Son’s hat-trick last weekend will have pleased Spurs supporters, their failure to score more than once in the last three league matches Kane’s missed will be a concern for them.

Southampton haven’t beaten a top-six side this season, and they haven’t scored more than one against a team above them in the table on the road since last season. We expect this one to be a low-scoring encounter – Under 2.5 Goals looks like a decent bet.
