West Ham v Liverpool
14.15 - 14/5/2017 - London Stadium, East London
West Ham effectively handed Chelsea the title by defeating Spurs, but it also meant they reached the magical 40-point mark as their players can rest a little easier now. Liverpool, meanwhile, missed out on a fantastic opportunity to consolidate their top-four position, failing to take advantage of a Saints side that offered no threat going forward, but nonetheless their fate remains in their own hands.
Victory over Spurs was the first time West Ham had defeated a top-eight side this season and the first time they’d avoided defeat at home to a top-six club. Earlier in the season they were conceding plenty but it’s now four clean sheets in five, though with the goals also drying up at the other end all four of these saw fewer than two goals.
Liverpool are just about getting the job done, only losing one of their last 10, winning six of these and with four by just a single goal margin. They’ve won three on the bounce on their travels and like the Hammers, they’ve found some defensive solidity but been less penetrative up top, keeping three clean sheets in their last four but only netting three times. Beating Spurs could have been West Ham’s big performance for the season and we think The Reds will win here. Rather than the 1.7 available we’ll back a narrow 1-0 victory as has been the scoreline in Liverpool’s last two away games.
