Watford v Southampton
15:00 - 4/3/2017 - Vicarage Road, Watford
These two teams sit in 12th and 13th in the league, separated by just a point, and have experienced similar trajectories so far this season: early season overperformance has given way to inconsistency.. With the Hornets failing to beat a 10-man West Ham side last weekend Claude Puel’s men will feel like this fixture is eminently winnable after their strong showing last Sunday in the EFL Cup final.
However, Southampton’s away form against middle-third sides has been fairly weak recently. They’ve won just one of their last seven at middle-third sides (against Bournemouth in the South Coast Derby), and they’ve failed to score in their last two such games. They’ve lost four of their last five across all competition and won just two of their last seven away, so despite last Sunday’s heroic effort they cannot come into this expecting an easy win. Watford have picked up points in four of their last five home matches against middle-third teams, losing only to Stoke in that stretch and scoring at least twice on three occasions – they stand an excellent chance of beating Southampton here.
We think Southampton have been priced up after their creditable efforts last weekend, but the reality is that Watford have been strong at home and Southampton may struggle to contain them. We’ll take the Hornets on the Draw No Bet.
