Watford v Chelsea
Chelsea needed a penalty and a late goal to edge out West Ham on Monday night but it was the spirit the team showed that impressed us most. Conte’s stamp on the display was evident with everyone on the pitch working hard in both attack and defence. They certainly look like they’ll be much more difficult to beat this term.
Watford will be pleased to return to Vicarage Road with a point from St. Mary’s and showed great fight in holding off the Saints for the final 20 minutes following Ben Watson’s red card. The Chelsea defence dealt with Andy Carroll satisfactorily on Monday but they will be asked a much bigger question going up against the physical combination of Troy Deeney and Igalho. However with both Matic and Kante playing deep, Chelsea look a lot less exposed at the back.
Mazzarri started with a 3-5-2 against Southampton which is much more likely to become a 5-3-2 with the Blues coming to town and in addition to Chelsea’s improved sureness under Conte we could be in for a tight opening exchange. Watford had 13 half-time draws last season and 10 of those were goalless so that looks a safe bet to happen again here.
