Tottenham v Middlesbrough
17.30 - 4/2/2017 - White Hart Lane, North London
Spurs will be wondering how they failed to score despite seeing 73% of the ball against Sunderland midweek, and despite going 10 games unbeaten in all competitions, they will feel that the Premier League trophy has slipped a little further out of their reach after taking only one point home from the Stadium of Light. Middlesbrough could only secure a point at home against a dogged West Brom side, their third stalemate in their last four as they’re just two points clear of the relegation zone.
Middlesbrough’s form against top-six sides has been very poor this season. They’ve gone W0-D2-L5 against such opposition, with four of those five losses seeing Boro behind at the break. This should give confidence to Spurs, whose draw against Sunderland snapped a run of eight consecutive wins against bottom-six sides. They’ve been particularly strong at home against opposition of this sort, winning nine straight at White Hart Lane, with the last four of those going over 2.5 goals. That being said, Middlesbrough have conceded the sixth-fewest goals in the league and the fewest of any bottom-half team – if Tottenham struggled to break down Sunderland (who have conceded the third-most), it’s possible that Middlesbrough could frustrate them.
We think that Middlesbrough’s stinginess won’t be enough for them to prevent Spurs thriving in front of home fans. They’ve won six on the trot at home in the league, scoring over three goals a game on average, and five of those have gone over 2.5 goals, so we’ll back Spurs and Overs.
