Sunderland v Southampton
15:00 - 11/2/2016 - Stadium of Light, Sunderland
Sunderland may still be bottom of the table, but their resounding 4-0 win away at Crystal Palace (which came on the back of a determined 0-0 draw with Tottenham) suggests they may have turned a corner in their efforts to stave off relegation this season. This week they have an opportunity to turn in back-to-back wins against a struggling Southampton side.
Southampton’s away form this season has been decidedly poor. They’ve won only once on the road since the start of September, and they’ve now suffered three consecutive losses on their travels. They’ve also lost three on the bounce away against bottom-three sides, and they’ve won only once in their last seven trips to the Stadium of Light in all competition, so it would be a big achievement for them to come home with three points. Sunderland’s home loss to Stoke recently marked the end of a run of just one defeat in their last 11 home games against bottom-half sides, and they’ll feel confident of getting something out of this clash with an out-of-form Southampton outfit.
It’s hard to say whether they’ll be able to build on their win last weekend, but with Southampton in such poor form and Sunderland looking good at home against weaker sides, we’ll take on the visitors with some cover on the draw.
