After an excellent start to the season that saw them pick up seven points from their first three games, Gijon have since lost nine of their last 12 and as a result they’re down to 18th. Villarreal hadn’t scored in three games ahead of the visit of Atletico Madrid on Monday night, but Fran Escriba’s side were impressive 3-0 winners in that game to move back up to 4th.
Despite their struggles, Gijon have managed to score in 11 of their 15 games and only Barcelona have prevented them from scoring at home. Their record when hosting teams between 3rd and 8th is an impressive W5-D1-L3 since the start of last season, including wins over Atletico, Sevilla and Villarreal themselves.
Indeed, since Villarreal have won just one of their seven road games, they look too short at 2.25 here.
