Gijon ended a run of six defeats in seven winless games as they won 2-0 at fellow strugglers Leganes to move within two points of safety. Atletico, meanwhile, mounted a miraculous recovery at home to Celta Vigo as they came from 2-1 down after 78 minutes to win 3-2 and so they remain in 4th, four points behind Sevilla.
Gijon have lost their last three at home, conceding 10 in the process, though they’ve scored in all but one of their games at El Molinon. However, they have shipped 12 in their four home games against top-six sides to date and while they beat Atletico 2-1 in this fixture last term, it’d be a surprise if they could repeat that result.
Having said that, Atletico have won only two of their last seven on the road but they’re generally pretty reliable when travelling to the lesser sides as they’ve won four of their seven trips to bottom-five teams since the start of last season, keeping a clean sheet in five of these games. However, Atleti have not looked their usual selves at the back this term, as evidenced by the Celta Vigo game, whilst Gijon have an excellent scoring record at home, netting against Villarreal not long ago, who have the best defence in the division. We’re backing Both Teams to Score at 2.1, whilst Atletico to Win and Both Teams to Score is of interest at 3.75.
