Southampton v Hull City

15:00 - 29/4/2017 - St Mary's Stadium, Southampton

Hull secured an impressive 2-0 win at home against Watford, a result that brings them to six wins at home in eight undefeated matches at the KCOM Stadium and means they now have a slim two-point gap between themselves and the relegation zone. This weekend, though, they have to negotiate a visit to St Mary’s, where Southampton have won only one of their last five across all competitions. The Saints return to the south coast after a 4-2 drubbing at Stamford Bridge, but a few more wins should guarantee a top-half finish.

The problem for Hull is that they’ve been atrocious on the road this season. They’ve lost 14 of their 17 road games, but they’ve scored at Stoke, Man City and Leicester in their last four, suggesting they could put the cat among the pigeons at Southampton. That being said, the Saints have won four of their last five against bottom-six sides, winning each of the last three by two goals or more. They’ve only been behind at half-time once in their last 10 home games, and that does not bode well for the Tigers, who have not scored in the first half in six of their last seven away from home. While they may hope to take advantage of the Saints’ indifferent home form, Marco Silva’s men must sort out their goalscoring woes on the road if they wish to come home with any points.

All things considered, we think Hull might nab one late on, but Southampton have been too good against bottom-six sides to justify backing the visitors here. The Saints have covered the -1 handicap repeatedly against bottom-six sides this season, and we think they could do it again.
