Middlesbrough v Southampton
15:00 - 13/5/2017 - Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough put up little resistance in their efforts to avoid relegation at Chelsea on Monday night. The feeling is that they’ve simply come and gone without really contributing a great deal to this Premier League season having shown little ambition throughout. They’ve at least put up more of a fight at home, with their only two defeats in their last seven coming against Arsenal and Man Utd. In fact, exclude the top-seven then their record at the Riverside is a respectable W4-D4-L3.
Southampton were brushed aside by Arsenal on Wednesday night as their dour end to the season continues, with Claude Puel’s long-term future reportedly uncertain. Once again, their attack was weak, producing just two shots on target meaning they’ve managed just nine shots on target in their last five league games. As a result, they’re winless in this time (D2-L3), failing to score in four.
The Saints have lost three of their five visits to bottom-six clubs this term and if you go back the start of last season then their record reads W3-D1-L6. In a game with very little at stake, perhaps Boro will be more motivated, playing in front of their home fans for the last time in the top-flight for at least a year. Southampton look short to us at odds-on and are worth taking on.
