Manchester Utd v Tottenham
14.15 - 11/12/16 - Old Trafford
Mourinho’s belated decision to trust Henrik Mkhitaryan paid dividends midweek as Man United brushed past Zorya in the Europa League thanks to goals from the Armenian and Zlatan, but they will face a test of a different calibre when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford this weekend. The Spurs side theybhost are coming off big wins over Swansea and CSKA Moscow in the last week, and will fancy their chances against a Man United team six points behind them in the table.
The Europa League can become a significant burden: only three English sides have finished in the top four in the league after starting the campaign in the Europa League, and draining trips to venues like Zorya cannot do much for United’s league aspirations. They are unbeaten in their last seven across all competitions, although they have won only one of their last five in the league, and they have not won a home league fixture at home since their win over Leicester on 24 September. That being said, Tottenham have only won one of their last 10 away games against top-six sides and they have not scored in their last two visits to Old Trafford, so the hosts may take some confidence from this record.
This one really could go either way, but three of Tottenham’s last four league games on the road and 10 of Man U’s last 13 home games have featured under 2.5 goals, so we’re going to back another low-scoring encounter.
