Liverpool left it late in Monday’s Merseyside derby, but Sadio Mane’s injury-time effort was enough to give them the three points they needed to retake second place in the table. On Tuesday they host Stoke, who will be furious at the inattention that allowed them to throw away a two-goal lead over ten-man Leicester. Liverpool remain unbeaten at home so far this season (W5-D2-L0) and Stoke have lost momentum in recent weeks, so they will face an uphill struggle when they visit Anfield.
Liverpool’s home record is particularly strong of late against middle-third sides. They have recorded Win/Win double results in seven of their last nine home matches, and their undefeated streak at home against such opposition stands at 11 games. Both teams have scored in eight of those 11 matches, though, so Liverpool’s oft-discussed defensive inconsistencies may allow Stoke to nick a goal. However, Stoke’s away record against top-six teams over the last two seasons is dire. They have failed to win any of their last six away games against such opposition, and their only goal across that run came in their recent loss to Arsenal. They’ve lost by at least two on five of six occasions, and with Liverpool averaging 2.27 goals per game against middle-third opposition at home, goals could come thick and fast here.
