Chelsea kept their dreams of a domestic league and cup double alive with an emphatic 4-2 win over Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-final, a result that could have a big psychological impact on Spurs as the season nears its end. Chelsea go in search of a win that could extend their current four-point lead at the top of the table on Tuesday night against Southampton, who have had 10 days to prepare following their 3-0 loss to Man City last weekend.
Chelsea have looked less secure in the last few weeks than they have at any other stage in the campaign, but given the calibre of opposition (they’ve played four top-five sides in their last 10 games), two wins and two losses in their last four in the league is an understandable return. They’ve been excellent at home, though: they’ve won 11 of their last 12 at Stamford Bridge, despite conceding in five of their last six there. Southampton have lost five of their last seven against top-five sides, but they’ve scored in two of the three of these that came on the road and in each of their last five on the road, so we think they’ll have a few chances in this one.
Chelsea will take the momentum from Saturday’s win forward into this fixture, but we think the short rest and habit of conceding goals at home will see them ship a goal or two. We’ll side with Chelsea to win and Both teams to Score.
