Chelsea v Crystal Palace

15:00 - 1/4/2017 - Stamford Bridge, West London

The Chelsea title procession keeps rolling on: they secured an unspectacular but useful 2-1 victory at the Britannia to maintain their 10-point cushion at the top, meaning they’ve gone W19-D2-L1 in their last 22, with 12 of these wins coming in 13 home games. They now host a Crystal Palace side that has shown a recent improvement in fortunes under Big Sam, who has guided them to three consecutive wins to nil and taken them out of the relegation zone, but who will struggle to compete with a team of Chelsea’s class.

Despite this recent success, the Eagles will be aware that they have not been good enough away from home to expect much from this fixture. Recent wins at Bournemouth and West Brom are their only away victories in the league since September, and with a record that has seen them go winless against current top-six sides we think they’ll do well to compete here. They’ve been down 1-0 at the half in each of their last four against top-six sides and Chelsea have led 1-0 at the break in six of their last seven against bottom-six sides, so we’d back them to lead by that scoreline at the half here.

The Eagles have failed to score in six of their eight away games against top-six sides since the start of last season, a stretch that has seen them go without a win against such opposition. Given that the Blues have conceded just once in their last eight against bottom-six sides, a Chelsea Win to Nil looks like a plausible outcome.
