Spurs managed to bounce back from their away loss to Gent last week with an excellent FA Cup victory over Fulham, and they now return to White Hart Lane in the knowledge that a win could see them return to second in the table. The visitors have had a two-week break after the victory over Crystal Palace that ended a three-game winless run, but after losing 4-0 in their last two games against Tottenham they will feel daunted by the prospect of an in-form Spurs side at home.
Stoke have a reputation for managing to withstand the efforts of top teams, but this season they’ve been very weak at top-six sides. They’ve lost all four of their games at top-six opponents, and six of their last eight games on the road against such teams have been Loss/Loss Half Time/Full Time results. Thus while Spurs haven’t been exceptional recently at home against middle-third sides (they’ve gone W4-D5-L1 against such sides at the Lane over the last two seasons), they’ll feel confident of overrunning Stoke here.
Spurs have been up at the half in four of their last six at home against middle-third sides, and given Stoke’s terrible first-half record at top-six teams we think they’ll take an early lead and hold onto it. We’ll back Spurs/Spurs in the HT/FT market.
